What Is an SRT File? The Subtitle Format Explained

What is an SRT file, exactly? It is a plain-text subtitle file that pairs each line of dialogue with a start and end time, so a video player knows when to show it. No styles, no fonts, no images — just numbered blocks of text and timestamps. Edit the live example above the fold and watch the preview react, then open your own file to see what an SRT file contains.

What Is an SRT File? Understand It in 4 Steps

You can answer the question "what is an SRT file" in two minutes, because every SRT file repeats the same tiny pattern. Follow along in the editable sample above the fold.

  1. 1

    Read one block

Each subtitle is a block: a number, a timing line with an arrow, then one or more text lines. That block is the smallest answer to what is an SRT file.

  2. 2

    Decode the timestamp

00:00:01,200 --> 00:00:03,400 means show the text for the 2.2 seconds between those clock times. Hours, minutes, seconds, comma, milliseconds — knowing what is an SRT file starts here.

  3. 3

    Break blocks apart

One blank line separates subtitles. Because the format is plain text, any editor — including the one on this page — can change an SRT file safely.

  4. 4

    Test your own SRT file

Open a real .srt in the viewer or download the sample and re-open it. Rendering your own subtitles proves you truly understand what is an SRT file.

What Is an SRT File, Technically?

SRT stands for SubRip, a Windows program from the early 2000s that ripped subtitles from DVDs. The text format it saved became a de-facto standard: an .srt extension, UTF-8 text, and a sequence of blocks. No official specification exists, which is why players tolerate small quirks like missing numbers or CRLF line endings when they read an SRT file.

The example below is a complete, valid SRT file — the same two-cue sample loaded in the editor above. If you are still asking what is an SRT file, this is all there is: a counter, a timing line, text, a blank line, repeat.

Plain text, forever readable

An SRT file opens in Notepad, TextEdit, VS Code or this page. No special apps, no binary parts — one reason what is an SRT file has stayed a simple question for two decades.

Timing to the millisecond

Timestamps in an SRT file resolve to one millisecond, precise enough to keep fast dialogue locked to the video.

Any language

UTF-8 SRT files carry Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Cyrillic and emoji alongside Latin text without conversion.

Universal player support

VLC, mpv, Premiere, DaVinci, YouTube and every streaming encoder accept an SRT file — it is the lowest common denominator of subtitles.

What Is an SRT File Missing? Styling, Video, VTT

What is an SRT file not? A video

An SRT file contains no picture and no audio. It travels as a separate .srt next to the video, and players overlay the text at playback time. Burning subtitles into the pixels is a separate rendering step no SRT file performs by itself.

No styling vocabulary

Answering what is an SRT file also means stating its limits: no colors, fonts, sizes, positions or karaoke effects. Formats like ASS exist for styling; an SRT file deliberately trades that away for compatibility everywhere. That trade-off is a big part of what is an SRT file: maximum reach, minimum decoration.

Not a WebVTT file

Browsers' <track> captions require WebVTT, a sibling format with a WEBVTT header and dot milliseconds. If a site refuses your SRT file, run it through the SRT to VTT converter — the dialogue survives untouched. So once you know what is an SRT file, you also know when to convert it. Once you can explain what is an SRT file in one sentence, every tool on this site becomes obvious.

After "What Is an SRT File": Working With One

Once you can answer what is an SRT file, the practical questions become conversion and repair. Rename .txt to .srt and nothing happens until the text inside follows the block pattern — the TXT to SRT converter builds that structure for you. Got a transcript with no times at all? Text to SRT assigns estimates you can adjust.

To check whether a file is healthy, open it in the SRT viewer: numbering gaps, overlaps and invalid timestamps are reported with line numbers. To move between formats, the SRT converter page maps every supported direction — VTT, ASS, LRC and TXT — using the same parsing engine that powers the live example answering what is an SRT file on this page.
