VTT to SRT Converter — VTT to SRT Online Free
Feed this VTT to SRT converter a WebVTT file and get back the SubRip that desktop editors, old players and delivery specs still demand. Cue identifiers, NOTE comments and styling blocks are cleanly separated, timestamps switch from dot to comma, and every cue is renumbered 1..N — entirely in your browser.

How to Convert VTT to SRT in 4 Steps
VTT to SRT is the rescue direction: the web speaks WebVTT, but the rest of the subtitle world — editors, broadcast specs, DVD and Blu-ray tooling — speaks SRT.
- 1
Upload the WebVTT file
Drop the .vtt in or paste its source. The VTT to SRT parser first validates the WEBVTT header, then reads every cue, identifier and setting.
- 2
Review the notices
Before converting VTT to SRT, the tool reports what WebVTT-only features (cue settings, STYLE/REGION blocks, identifiers) will be left behind.
- 3
Convert VTT to SRT
Timestamps become comma-style, cues renumber 1..N and sort by time, and the SRT blocks assemble with CRLF endings and UTF-8 text — instantly, locally.
- 4
Download the .srt
Save the SubRip output and load it anywhere SRT is expected. The VTT to SRT result re-parses cleanly in the SRT viewer if you want proof.
What Changes in a VTT to SRT Conversion
The two formats carry identical dialogue and timing, so a VTT to SRT conversion is a careful rewrite of structure: separator, header, numbering and ordering. Nothing creative happens to your text.
What cannot survive is WebVTT's extras. SRT has no STYLE blocks, no REGION definitions, no cue settings and no per-cue identifiers. The converter drops them from the dialogue and lists each drop as a notice — a VTT to SRT export never quietly mixes metadata into your subtitles.
Dot → comma milliseconds
00:01.200 becomes 00:00:01,200 — hours restored, separator swapped, digits identical after VTT to SRT conversion.
NOTE blocks removed
Author comments stay comments: the VTT to SRT output contains zero NOTE text in the dialogue.
Identifiers dropped
Cue names like scene-1 are reported and removed; SRT numbers every cue itself after the VTT to SRT pass.
Sorted and renumbered
Output cues are ordered by start time and numbered 1..N, the structure every SRT consumer expects.
VTT to SRT by Example
This pair shows a full-feature WebVTT cue and its clean VTT to SRT result.
input.vtt → output.srt
input.vtt WEBVTT NOTE Comment scene-1 00:01.200 --> 00:03.400 align:start Hello, world! output.srt 1 00:00:01,200 --> 00:00:03,400 Hello, world!
Where the header goes
The WEBVTT line opens the source file and simply has no equivalent in SRT, so the VTT to SRT conversion omits it. Reversing direction later re-adds it automatically in the SRT to VTT converter.
Cue settings and positioning
align, line, position and size describe on-screen layout that SRT cannot express. The VTT to SRT tool keeps them out of the text and tells you they were seen — your dialogue stays word-perfect.
Invalid files fail loudly
A file without the WEBVTT header is rejected with an explicit error rather than half-converted, because pretending to succeed would be worse than the error. VTT to SRT downloads stay locked until the source is valid.
Round-tripping between the formats
Because VTT to SRT and SRT to VTT preserve timing to the millisecond, you can freely move files between the two formats as your toolchain demands. Convert VTT to SRT for the editing pass, back to VTT for the web player — the dialogue never drifts, and every conversion reports exactly what changed.
When You Need VTT to SRT
Editing suites and legacy players ask for SRT even when your captions were authored as WebVTT — a course platform exports VTT, the broadcast spec demands SRT, and the VTT to SRT converter is the bridge. Archivists normalize mixed collections to one format; translators receive VTT from web teams and deliver SRT back.
Because processing is local, caption files under NDA or with unpublished content convert safely. Start in the VTT viewer if you only need to read, or use the universal SRT converter when the target format might also be ASS or TXT.
One more VTT to SRT detail: download names derive from your source file, so lecture-03.vtt becomes lecture-03.srt with no manual renaming.
A final VTT to SRT tip: keep both files. The VTT stays authoritative for the web player, the SRT travels into editing suites — and regenerating either direction takes one click whenever the captions are revised.
